Rehome A Dobermann Pincher

Golden Oldies Sponsorship Scheme

Golden Oldies

Dobes in their twilight years are our 'Golden Oldies'. There are many reasons why these senior dogs come to us - for example an elderly owner dying or being too frail to cope, a relationship breakdown, house repossessions and incredibly, just to make way for a new puppy. Regardless of the reason for their homeless status, these senior dogs deserve to live out their days in comfort and security, having given unquestioning love and devotion to their owners for many years.

The majority of Golden Oldies in our care have 'issues' and although often these dogs can be of sound temperament, sociable and fit for their age, sadly it is more difficult to find them new homes. Advancing years can mean increased veterinary bills and few people will consider an older dog that is set in its ways.

We would prefer to place these elderly dogs in foster homes rather than kennels, but realistically it is difficult to find suitable environments. Dobermann Welfare are extremely fortunate to have the use of a specialist rescue kennel where these dogs are cared for and aided with our Sponsorship Scheme - called 'Golden Oldies' - we are able to fund the comfort and care they deserve.

Jess and Ben

Jess and Ben are two 'Golden Oldies' now living in a permanent foster home having been surrendered to the DWA. A mother aged 12 and a son aged 10 years, this gorgeous, loving pair unfortunately have some of the health issues that come with old age, and for which we would appreciate support towards their ongoing veterinary bills. See their story on our Success Story - page together with some more photographs of Jess and Ben.

How You Can Help...

Farewells to JAKE (1998-2010), FENTON (1997-2010) and TARA (2000-2009)

Jake, A Much Loved Dobermann Dog

Jake (1998-2010)

Unbelievably in the first 3 weeks of January we lost two of our old timers. Jake suddenly went into a rapid decline, losing weight quickly and going off his food. Nor could Sue tempt him with hand-fed tasty treats. Old age caught up with this lovely Blue dobermann and it was time to say goodbye to ensure that he did not suffer.

Jake was treated very roughly in his early life making him dominant and wilful, so he had to be handled firmly but fairly, which was never a problem with Sue in charge at the DWA kennels. Jake was a bit of a comic, loved his squeaky toys and other dog friends. During the cold weather and in his last days he developed an obsession with a fluorescent, fleece-lined jacket which he proudly marched about in like some sort of canine warden and flatly refused to allow Sue to take it off! Sadly this affectionate dobie who had been with us for many, many years had to be put to sleep on Monday 18 January ensuring he did not suffer.

Fenton, A Much Loved Dobermann Dog

Fenton (1997-2010)

Alas dear Fenton a handsome lad who was in his thirteenth year had to be put to sleep on Monday 11 January after sadly having a turn whilst out walking with Sue and his fellow canine companions. Sue took Fenton straight to her vet and was informed he was suffering from kidney failure so sadly there was no alternative for this old favourite.

Fenton had become a permanent resident at the DWA kennels in Wales being too old to cope with further changes in his life and he was a happy and content boy in his later days. Handsome still despite his years Fenton was a permanent resident at the DWA kennels in Wales as he was too old for more changes in his life and had become a content and happy boy. It is difficult to comprehend the trauma Fenton must have experienced after his owner died when the widow locked Fenton in a shed with no company or exercise just giving him the bare necessities, food and water.

On arriving with Welfare, Fenton did not like other dogs at all, but he was going for walks at exercise time with up to 11 dogs, strictly supervised by Sue James until he became unwell. Sue had to keep an eye on him so he did not take any liberties but this was a very different Fenton and a dog who was having some fun in his life. A lovely natured dog he was receiving the cuddles and love he so appreciated. Not surprisingly Fenton loved his food and enjoyed his walks though he was slowing down with the years.

Thank you to all of Fenton's Sponsors. He will be missed.

Tara, A Much Loved Dobermann Dog

Tara (2000-2009)

Sadly Tara passed away in her sleep on Sunday evening, 1 November 2009.

Tara was a very young looking 9 year old black and tan, spayed bitch and an amazing girl. She only had partial vision in one eye due to a detached retina, which we believe was caused by a blow to her head. She also had the signs of Wobblers Syndrome (Cervical Spondylitis). Tara was an extremely pretty bitch who loved people and was good with other dogs. After many months in our kennels she was found a foster home in June 2008 but sadly this did not work out and she was returned to us after 4 months where she spent the remainder of her days. Tara adored playing, going for walks and was a real sun-worshipper. Thank you to all those people who so kindly supported Tara whilst in the DWA's care.
